This vacuum has some serious suction! The first time I used it, my carpets looked like new. I also really like the Green/Red clean indicator light. My only complaint is that its hard to manuever (heavy, long cord & hard to turn).

After months of searching reviews everywhere on the net and talking with people, I decided to give this vacuum a try. I must say as soon as it arrived I dragged it into the house (it is a heavy box) and set it up. To my surprise the only thing I had to do was take the two screws and screw on the handle and take some tape off of it. Within 5 minutes it was ready to run, I went through my whole house which consists of 1 carpeted room, 2 hardwood floored rooms with area rugs, and a kitchen and shoe room which houses a litter box for our 4 cats. This vacuum did FANTASTIC! I have not see suction like this in forever! It actually pulled up my runner in the kitchen which my old vacuum didn’t do even when I first got it. I can not say enough about this vacuum. The bags keep the dirt inside and does NOT blow it all over your clean floor or rooms. If you have a little extra cash to spare, spend it here this vacuum is a wise descion all around!

I went back and forth on getting an expensive vac (wind tunnel type) vs. this bagged vac. At the end of the day I am happy I made this choice. Great vac … great suction … not heavy (especially compared to the wind tunnel vac) and very easy to replace the bag. I asked my cleaning lady what she recommended prior to getting a new vac and she said, hands down a bagged vac. In her experience the wind tunnels are heavy and don’t suck as well … especially on floor and low carpet. Anyway, great buy!!

Reading some of the negative reviews on this product (the Y6485900 model), I had a few reservations but, given the approval of the majority of reviewers and Consumer Rpts recommendation, I went ahead with my purchase in June 2009 and had no complaints: it arrived safely by the first of July, assembled easily and performed well. But I feel I must add my recent experience for your consideration: after about 3-1/2 months (before November 1st), it jammed and smoke was coming from the back corner, so I immediately unplugged it. The roller wouldn’t move so I took it out and reinstalled it and the belts. Still no movement and again the smoking. I’m lucky in that Hoover has one authorized repair center within driving distance of me in this part of Texas, so I took it in (you might want to check their Web site to see if there are any near you before purchasing).
The first surprise was hearing that, because Hoover reimburses them so little of their $45 diagnostic fee, I would have to agree to pay $25 of the fee before they’d look at it, and I should be aware that Hoover takes about 3-4 weeks to get the replacement parts to them. Okay. Not thrilled but I figured it was cheaper than the cost of shipping it back to Amazon or Hoover. The diagnosis, though, stunned me. The bearings on the roller melted because of hair on the roller. Honestly - they melted! Because of hair!
To give a little context here: our home is about 2,200sf but most of it is tiled with the exception of four rooms, two of which are rarely used. My teenage daughter and I live by ourselves and I think we’re pretty darn neat. Not fastidious, but normal. So vacuuming a maximum of 1,000sf about every two weeks for a period of less than 4 months put enough buildup on the bearings that they melted. I told this to the tech, noting that I do clean the roller periodically, and I was told that they recommend the roller be cleaned after every use or at least once a week. This just stunned me. I bought this vacuum to replace my 20-yr old Hoover that was starting to lose some of its spark and I’d never had a problem like this. If this is an example of the quality out there right now, then I would have bought the cheaper model instead, or gone all the way to a much higher-end one.
Oh, yeah - the warranty? It doesn’t cover this so it cost me $40 in parts and labor. Here’s hoping that it gets better after this!

A consumer magazine rated this vacuum as a top choice, but it is a flimsy toy compared to a Kenmore upright we ultimately purchased for the same price range. Don’t order this item! In returning the item, I admitted it wasn’t defective, just unwanted, so we had to pay the return shipping. The vacuum does not pull up the pile on older carpeting and leaves streak lines behind. The self-propelled feature is jerky and is difficult to turn. The thin plastic construction of the Hoover was a joke compared to the more solid and sophisticated vacuum we purchased at Sears. I’m very satisfied with most of my purchases from Amazon and this was a rare exception. Consider yourself warned and divorce yourself of buying this anniversary edition!
